Danielle Trial’s Portland Presentation

Danielle Trial, Rhode Island College

During the Portland Conference in April, Danielle Trial, a junior at Rhode Island College, presented on “The effect of adaptive instruction on the rhythm achievement of elementary school students with hearing disabilities.” Her project involved the use of drums and body percussion and, based on the response of students at the Student Caucus and of the audience at her impromptu presentation during Sunday morning’s breakfast, Trial’s project was one of the most talked about and well-received of the event. Click here to read Trial’s description of her presenting experience and here to see photos of both her Saturday scheduled lecture and her encore Sunday presentation in the hotel lobby.

Partners in the Park Tuition Stipends Awarded

Dear NRHC colleagues:

Since 2009, the region has committed to awarding five applicants up to $500 each for the Partners in the Parks tuition stipend awards. As of 2011, the region also committed to spreading out awards among member institutions as well as following other new guidelines available at http://nrhcnewsletter.org/partners-in-the-park-2. Our thanks for screening applications and deciding awards go to our two faculty representatives on the executive board, Dr. Susan Dinan, William Paterson University, and Dr. Ben Moritz, Mansfield University.

This year, the region received eight applications. The decisions were difficult given the quality of student essays and the strength of director letters of support.

In alphabetical order by student name, the recipients are:

1. Eric Frary, Olympic National Park

Westfield State University, Director: Ricki Kantrowitz

2. Julieann Hartley, Great Smoky Mountains

Anna Maria College (MA), Director: Paul Russell

3. Lori Linsenbigler, Great Smoky Mountains

Community College of Allegheny County, Director: Julia Fennell

4. Madeline McKain, Olympic National Park

Point Park University, Director: Helen Fallon

5. Angel Ng, Great Basin

Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus, Co-Directors: Cris Gleicher and James Clarke

Please join me in congratulating these students and wishing them the best of experiences in their chosen parks. I am sure we all look forward to reading the students’ reflections on their experiences, soon to be posted at our website: nrhcnewsletter.org.
