Goings on Around the NRHC

News

As one academic year wraps up and we look forward to next Fall, we here at the NRHC newsletter are hoping to involve our member institutions in using our newsletter to brag a little about what they have been up to.

To get us started, The College of New Rochelle has sent us their honors newsletter, Femmes D’Espirit.

Click here (it may take a moment to fully load) to see what honors students there have been accomplishing this Spring.

If you’re short on time to read their beautiful magazine, take a moment to enjoy a brief article about CNR’s honors students’ work displayed the the Baltimore Conference in April.

NRHC Portland Conference Presidential Address

News

During the Portland Conference this Spring, NRHC President Julia Fennell’s offered students a creative connection between poetry and the daily life of an honors student in her presidential address. Her speech, “The Poetry of Honors” connected the conference to National Poetry Month, as the conference took place mostly in April.

She suggested that being an honors student and reading a poem have much in common, specifically how one approaches both tasks. “Honors education and reading a poem require similar mindsets,” she said, “Both interactions require that we do the following: Inhabit the Room, Play in the Dark, and Conspire and Collaborate.”

The full text of her speech – in which she expands upon these three ideas – can be found here.

Inaugural Art Exhibit Debuts at Portland Conference

News

Pictured are Emily Stevenson, Jessica Koch, and Jeremy Frusco

By Lori Rubeling

The inaugural NRHC student art exhibition, installed at the Eastland Hotel Gallery, welcomed many visitors. Seven of the twelve artists were able to attend the show, meet each other, and of course talk about their work with gallery visitors. I truly enjoyed meeting and spending time with Cara Constantino, Jeremy Frusco, Cameron Garrity, Jessica Koch, Stephanie Lyon, Brie Skinner, and Emily Stevenson. Our conversations deepened my appreciation of their work.

Joanna Gonsalves and I also met with Jennifer Hutchins the Portland First Friday Art Walk (http://www.firstfridayartwalk.com/) co-sponsor and Portland Arts & Cultural Alliance executive director. Jennifer’s interest in our exhibit was heartwarming. She also provided background information on how the City of Portland promotes its cultural events.

An archive of the NRHC Art Walk Exhibition can be viewed at http://nrhcartwalkexhibition.blogspot.com/.

Lori Rubeling is the exhibition curator and incoming NRHC Vice President.

Developing in Honors™ – “The Big Picture: Higher Ed and Honors”

By Brian C. Etheridge, University of Baltimore

Higher education today is under significant duress.  In the last few years, state legislatures have slashed appropriations for higher education while university endowments have struggled to regain lost value.  To make ends meet, many colleges have accelerated tuition increases (a troubling trend that has caught the attention of an election-year president).  In addition to coping with the constant threat of budget shortfalls, universities have also sought to adapt to technological change and the exploding popularity of for-profit colleges.  (more…)

Developing in Honors: Nuts and Bolts

The 2012 Developing in Honors™(DIH) nuts-and-bolts workshop at the 2012 NRHC council meeting follows the practice of the NCHC in that it aims to meet the needs of experienced honors administrators, faculty, and professional staff (defined as having at least one year experience in their current honors positions by the time of the 2012 Baltimore Conference), though others involved in programs at earlier stages of development are also welcome, and encouraged, to attend. At the regional meeting, our aim is discuss topics of common interest as well as brainstorm solutions to unique challenges. The nuts-and-bolts session is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m.
